Question 2

Customer:

Subject: Why is my site coming from California?!

I’m in London, but looking at your IPs it shows that you are serving my website from California. Can that be right? Why is that? I thought you were supposed to serve my website from some places close to me?

Response to Customer:

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out!

Your site appears to be served from California because Cloudflare uses a global network of data centers to deliver content quickly and reliably. Your requests are served from the nearest available data center that has the content cached, which may not always be physically closest to you. Routing decisions can also depend on network conditions, like congestion or availability.

If you want to check which data center is serving your site, you can try simple tools like your browser’s developer console or curl -v to see the response headers. But rest assured, your site is being delivered correctly and efficiently through Cloudflare’s network.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Thought Process and Tools Used:

I considered how Cloudflare’s CDN and edge network operate, particularly intelligent routing and caching across multiple data centers. I referenced dig and curl -v to confirm which edge server responds to a request, helping explain why the user’s physical location may differ from the serving data center. I looked at this official documentation. My response reassures the customer that Cloudflare is functioning as designed, while providing an easy way to check the edge location.
